Bringing Up the Bodies

Nadifa Mohamed
Where do you begin in the past? How do you make it seem alive and exciting? How do you tell a story set in a time and place strange to you? How do you bring out themes that are relevant to you or the times we live in? In these workshops you will learn how to combine research and your own imagination to create work that is truthful, engaging and full of colour and texture.
This is a single-session event.

These four workshops are designed to help writers develop a short story or the first chapter of a historical novel - or to continue one already in development. Participants are invited to work on their projects outside of the workshop.

In each session, Nadifa will teach different aspects of writing craft. In our four sessions we will discuss integrating research into fiction, building narrative, tackling dialogue, and character development.

In each session we will discuss what we are writing, what we are struggling with, and how we can tell historical stories in an original way. Students will not workshop each other and the workshops are open to people at different stages in their writing process.

After the final session, participants can submit up to 10 pages of writing and Nadifa will offer feedback in the form of a marked-up manuscript and a brief feedback letter.
