Photojournalism in the Field

Nicole Tung
Join Nicole Tung, a photojournalist with over a decade of experience in covering conflict, as she discusses how to generate story ideas, and how to approach complex topics with empathy and intention. With these foundations, we’ll talk about ways of strengthening storytelling techniques to better document issues of socio-political and human rights importance. Nicole will also look at how to develop short and long-term projects with participants, from research, to image-making, to editing work. She will also share some lessons learned along the way from photographing in difficult situations, to managing a freelance career.
This is a single-session event.

Over the course of the workshop, you will have the chance to discuss the work you’re currently doing, or planning for. You will also receive personalized portfolio reviews and advice on how to work on news features as well as establishing good working relationships with editors and clients.

Session 1: In this first session, Nicole will introduce you to her work and discuss the various aspects of photojournalism to consider, from ethics, to aesthetics, and content and context in imagery. She will also give advice on how to successfully pitch your ideas for assignments or funding. As this will be a small group of participants, everyone will have the opportunity to introduce themselves and speak briefly about the work they are doing. In between Session 1 & 2, each participant will be given a small assignment that will help them think about the process of visual storytelling.

Session 2: In Session 2, Nicole will do a live critique of assignments given to each participant in the previous session. She will provide guidance on the editing process, and how this is often the most important stage when producing photo stories and essays, or longer term projects. Participants will have the chance to discuss each others’ work

Session 3: In the last session, Nicole will discuss the kinds of situations photographers encounter whether on the street, or in difficult situations, and how to navigate them. She will touch on the work that’s involved even when you’re not taking photos, to succeed in bringing vision and style into your images. Nicole will also discuss the fine balancing act between professional business practices for freelancers, and the need to stay creative and true to the work you do.

Before the start of the workshop, you'll be asked to submit a 15-20 image portfolio (which can include photo stories or single images), which Nicole will review and provide individualized feedback on.
