Art Imitating Life: How Climate Fiction Addresses Climate Change

Description

As ice caps melt and temperatures rise, novels about climate change have moved from the margins to the center of world literature. In this seminar, we will explore the emerging genre of climate fiction (aka "cli-fi") and discuss how the best work in this genre helps us understand our moment and imagine possible futures. Award-winning literature and sustainability professor John Sitter will lead us in an engaging discussion of questions like:

  • How well does climate fiction reflect scientific thinking?
  • How do serious novelists, working in a form so well suited to record ordinary life and personal experience, broaden their vision to include planetary time, space, and consciousness?
  • Are climate dystopias fatalistic, or can they function as self-negating prophecies?

For this event, we’re taking inspiration from our favorite college literature course and our ideal book club discussion. We’re capping the number of participants at 20 so everyone can engage in the conversation, and just as for a great literature seminar or book club, we’ll ask everyone to read a short story in advance. (Don't worry, it's a quick read!). At the event, Professor Sitter will give a talk on climate fiction as a genre before leading us in a discussion & analysis of the short story in light of what we learned during his talk.

This is an exciting opportunity for fans of novels like The Overstory, Flight Behavior, New York 2140, or anyone interested in cli-fi to participate in an intimate seminar with one of the leading scholars and top teachers in this field.
