Susan Hawk is an agent at Upstart Crow Literary, a boutique literary agency she joined after twenty-five years working across many areas of the children’s book world: as a Marketing Director at Penguin Books for Young Readers and Henry Holt; as a bookseller and librarian; and in editorial at Dutton Children’s Books.
She’s looking for every kind of book for children and teens: picture books, middle grade, YA and everything in-between. Her focus is on novels, but her eclectic list includes author-illustrators, graphic novelists, and works of non-fiction for young readers. Stories with elegant, precise language; affecting, deeply drawn characters; a strong sense of place; and a sharp, irresistible hook will draw her attention. The thru-line in her client’s work is a generous, wry humor that shines through, even – often – in the darker moments. Literary and commercial work is welcome; she loves to be surprised, and is actively seeking diverse stories and creators.
